Avengers: Age of Ultron Preview

On 1st May this year moviegoers look to be in for a treat with the release of the third instalment of the Avengers series – Avengers: Age of Ultron.

And with 2012’s The Avengers being the third highest grossing film in history with a massive $1.5 billion earned, the pressure is on to make this the biggest film of all time.

So what have Marvel Studios got in store for us? Here are a few hints.

More of the same?

Initial trailers seem to prove the theory that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. There’s the instantly recognisable cast of characters from Robert Downey Jr’s wisecracking Tony Stark to Scarlett Johansson’s highly glamorous Black Widow. Plus fans will be reassured to hear that the highly reliable Joss Whedon is back in the director’s chair.

And the tone of the film seems to be similar to previous efforts. The redoubtable Chris Hemsworth returns as Thor to give the series a touch of muscle-bound comic relief, and there are all of the high-powered CGI effects that you’d expect.

New characters

However, due to the recent massive success of another Marvel franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy that succeeded through its razor sharp script and excellent casting, there have been a few additions to the Avengers camp.

Not least is the introduction of new characters. James Spader is set to become a central part of the film through his portrayal of the arch villain Ultron.

Ultron comes into being through Tony Stark’s attempts to create a peacekeeping robot. However, this inevitably goes wrong and so the team are faced with a highly advanced killing machine redolent of Terminator, who has a chilling obsession to wipe humanity from the Earth.

Massive marketing

And of course no Marvel movie is a mere film release. The studios are masters of the movie franchise where there’s a host of movie-related products such as video games, actions figures and even Iron Man slot machines found on websites like Black Diamond.

So for Age of Ultron we’ve already had Harley-Davidson providing their first electric motorcycle for the character Black Widow to ride in the film. And while there has been traditional tie-ins hinted at such as comic books, there’s already been signs of marketing synergy at work with exclusive Avengers trailers appearing on Samsung Mobile’s YouTube channel, and even an Avengers-style Gear VR virtual reality device.

And with Avengers: Infinity War pencilled in for a 2018 release, this is one franchise that is showing no signs of slowing down!
