Looks like the ‘will he, won’t he’ debate over Joss Whedon’s return to the Marvel Avengers universe, can now be dropped. Disney has officially announced that Whedon will indeed direct the sequel, due in 2015. Sounds like a good excuse to celebrate with a shwarma take-out. In the meantime Disney has several individual super hero franchises to deliver, namely; Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man 3 in May 2013, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor – The Dark World in November 2013, and with Chris Evans’ Captain America – The Winter Soldier in April 2014.

There was also speculation over the possibility of another Hulk movie, but in all honesty that would be a terrible idea. The Hulk seems to play better in a supporting role, as evidenced by Whedon’s Avengers. You only need to look back at the problems affecting the last two attempts, with a character that spends most of the movie grunting and groaning. How can you expect that to carry a film?

Personally, I’m glad that Whedon will be back at the helm. His snappy dialogue and humour were a refreshing take on the marvel super hero franchise. Although, this time around, there will be higher expectations on Whedon to perform.

The Avengers is currently the third highest grossing film with roughly $1.5bn in the bank.
