APPARENTLY FILMS CAN RAPE PEOPLE NOW

In the last couple of months there’s been several people, in Hollywood, claiming to be “raped” by one thing or another. And they’re not referring to actual rape either. The series of “rapes” began with Kim Novak, who decided it was a matter of urgency to tell the world that she had been raped by the film The Artist. Taking out a full page ad in, the established Hollywood trade magazine, Variety that accused the makers of The Artist for re-using Bernard Herrmann’s score from Vertigo, resulting in the 50’s starlet crying rape!

Let’s have a look at her open letter…

FROM THE DESK OF
KIM NOVAK

I WANT TO REPORT A RAPE.

I FEEL AS IF MY BODY—OR, AT LEAST MY BODY OF WORK—HAS BEEN VIOLATED BY THE MOVIE, “THE ARTIST.”

Oh I see, she’s used a play on words here, how very smart….never mind the real rape victims. As everyone would agree, using a song from a film you didn’t direct, write or score is just as rapey I guess.

The film could and should have been able to stand on its own without depending upon Bernard Herrmann’s score from Alfred Hitchcock’s VERTIGO to provide it more drama. Much of VERTIGO‘s music was written during, not after, filming—that was the way Hitchcock worked. The Love Theme was woven musically in with the puzzle pieces of the storyline. In my opinion, the combined efforts of the composer, director, Jimmy Stewart, and myself were all violated.

I AM THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SPEAK NOW. They didn’t need to use what I consider to be on of the most important love scenes in motion picture history by playing the VERTIGO score and using emotions it engenders as if it were their own. Even though they gave a small credit to Bernard Herrmann at the end, I believe this to be cheating, at the very least. Shame on them!

IT IS MORALLY WRONG FOR THE ARTISTRY OF OUR INDUSTRY TO USE AND ABUSE FAMOUS PIECES OF WORK TO GAIN ATTENTION AND APPLAUSE FOR OTHER THAN WHAT THEY WERE INTENDED. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO SAFEGUARD OUR SPECIAL BODIES OF WORK FOR POSTERITY, WITH THEIR ORIGINAL AND INDIVIDUAL IDENTITIES INTACT AND PROTECTED.

Kim Novak

OMG! TOTES AMAZEBALLS, DONT THINK I’VE SEEN THIS MUCH CAPS LOCK IN A LETTER B4!. Classic drama queen antics.

The Artist director, Michel Hazanavicius, said he used the score as one of many homages to the classic era of cinema. He responded to Novak’s letter with all the restraint of an Englishman, which is quite surprising considering he is French.

The Artist was made as a love letter to cinema, and grew out of my (and all of my cast and crew’s) admiration and respect for movies throughout history.  It was inspired by the work of Hitchcock, Lang, Ford, Lubitsch, Murnau and Wilder. I love Bernard Herrmann and his music has been used in many different films and I’m very pleased to have it in mine. I respect Kim Novak greatly and I’m sorry to hear she disagrees. [THR]

Well said Michel, a serving of Rawst Beouf is on it’s way. Unfortunately the serial raping of Hollywood didn’t end there. Courtney Love, the widow of Nirvana front-man Kurt Cobain, recently accused the Muppet’s of raping his memory, when they performed a version of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ for the Muppet’s Movie. Great, now I’ll never look at Kermit the frog the same way again

And today we hear a man, who just goes to show that metaphorical rape goes both ways, is complaining about Michael Bay raping his childhood by changing the origin story of for his upcoming remake of the Teenage Mutant Hero/Ninja Turtles series.

So either the definition of rape is changing or people are just becoming increasingly faux outraged at things which really do not compare to the violation of actual rape -will we need to precede the word rape with ‘actual’ from now on?
