I’ve decided to put down my 5th pint of Guinness, on this here St. Patrick’s Day, to do what any sci-fi/film geek would do, and analyze the hell out of this new two and a half minute (2:33 min to be exact) trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus. We’ve been promised this trailer for ages, it was supposed to be out early this morning, but instead we got a 2nd, trailer for the trailer. A concept which even Prometheus writer, Damon Lindelof, found ridiculous…

So anyway, I watched the trailer and quickly realized the shear volume of information hitting my eyeballs was dangerously close to sending me into epileptic fits. So I decided to watch it frame by frame to pick up any of the split second shots I may have missed in the first few viewings.

Here is the full length trailer in glorious full HD…comeback after your 10th viewing and let’s compare notes.

Firstly, AWESOME!, secondly this is almost certainly about the “Space Jokey” aliens as was speculated months ago. Although, the eagle eyed viewers amongst you, would have noticed a wall sculpture depicting the original Alien flicker onto screen, revealing that we may get a lot more on the background story, to the Alien franchise than we expected.

Noomi Rapace will play the lead role of Elizabeth Shaw (an Anthropologist) – One would expect her to portray the role in a Ripley-esque fashion. Michael Fassbender is certainly playing an Android manufactured by the mysterious Weyland Industries (See the Guy Pearce TED Talk). Charlize Theron has an interesting character name – Meredith Vickers, with the last name perhaps giving a clue to her back story – The Vickers family owned the famous Vickers & Sons armament company, supplying all major wars since 1828. Perhaps she is a wealthy heir to an armaments company who funds the Prometheus exploration?? All I know is that writer, Damon Lindelof, used similar techniques in his LOST TV series, where character names revealed the small clues or philosophy behind each mystery on the show – a.k.a The Hanso Foundation.

In the stills we can see several interesting points:-

  • The crew are sent to the alien planet, while in stasis (a deep sleep hibernation)
  • The exploration discovers alien life inside an array of vases, similar in shape and size to the eggs seen in Alien.
  • Fassbender’s, android character David, stumbles upon a 3D hologram depicting a stellar map which contains an image of earth, revealing that the aliens are aware of its existence and may have plans for it.
  • a wall sculpture of the original alien
  • We also get a view of the now infamous “space jockey” take his seat in the chair.
  • A brief glimpse of a crew member transformed into a zombie/morphed alien hybrid, attacking others.
  • Noomi Rapace being attacked by a tall alien figure.

[UPDATE] You can also catch the recording of the live stream interview with Ridley and Lindelof, HERE.

[2nd UPDATE] There is also a viral video circulating which shows the android “David 8” commercial for Weyland industries. Fassbender appears as a packaged android complete with foam cushioning, HERE.

The plot summary on IMDB has been updated to reflect the new info from the trailer:

A team of scientists journey through the universe on the spaceship “Prometheus” on a voyage to investigate Alien life forms. The team of scientists becomes stranded on an Alien world, and as they struggle to survive it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves, but to all of mankind

Here is a slide show of all the interesting snaps I managed to take from the 1080p HD trailer I found, thanks to AMC Theaters.
