THE WILHELM SCREAM

Geeky sound engineers are having waaaay to much fun at our expense since 1951 with a sound effect called ‘ The Wilhelm Scream’. As the cartoon above illustrates, the ‘Wilhelm Scream’ was first used in the film Distant Drums to sound like a man being bitten by an alligator. In 1953, it was recycled and used for minor character, Private Wilhelm, who is shot by an arrow and dies in the movie The Charge at Feather River…hence the name. Since then it’s popped up in almost every major action blockbuster to date, 140 and counting. garnering a cult status amongst sound engineers. Aren’t they just a funny bunch….
